We
had three goals for 2002. One: dig a 1/2 mile of tenches and
lay water pipe to the school and three locations within the
village of Nana Kenieba. Drinking fountains and faucets
were to be installed to provide water for drinking and cooking.
Two: four doctors treating the sick for a week at the medical
clinic. Three: scrub, clean, and paint inside and out all
twelve rooms of the school and the supporting structures.
The determined people of Nana Kenieb dug trenches
over 1/2 mile in total length and 18 inches deep. With picks,
shovels, gourds, and even their hands they brought clean water
to four new sites in the village.
Painters
scrubbed the all the walls, cleaned the rooms and painted
the school. The pride of 640 students reflected in the bright
new face of the school. New maps of the world, Africa, and
Mali were provided and hung on the walls. Many school supplies
were given. Both students and teachers were appreciative.
Our Medicine for Mali team of ten took over
2500 pounds of medical, school, and other supplies. We purchased
another 2500 pounds of needed supplies in Bamako. A new motorcycle
was added for the nurses and the members of the Health Committee
. They try to meet with and serve the surrounding villages.
The
medical clinic was staffed by Dr. Steve and Dr. Elise DeVore
and two doctors from Bamako. Nina, Suzanne, Jill and Kristin
work the triage to find those in immediate need. The team
saw over 600 patients. Fevers as high as 106, malaria, worms,
and ear infections are common among the children and babies.
In
2003 intensive efforts
are planed to educate the people and provide medicine and
supplies in the fight against malaria. The expansion medical
care to include the five surrounding villages is being considered.
